A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas threatened to unravel Wednesday after rockets fired from the Palestinian territory of Gaza crashed into southern Israel.

The attack prompted the first Israeli airstrike in Gaza since a sustained Israeli air campaign in November halted the firing of hundreds of rockets by Palestinian terrorists.

The latest conflict comes ahead of the arrival of Secretary of State John Kerry, who hopes to spur peace negotiations between the Palestinians and Israel.

The Israeli Defense Forces said it launched Wednesday's airstrikes against two military targets in Gaza in response to what is the Palestinians' third violation of a cease-fire since the November conflict.

"We will not allow shooting of any sort (even sporadic) toward our citizens and our forces," Moshe Yaalon, a former military chief of staff, said.
