איך זעה נישט פארוואס הצלה נעמט נישט אריין קיין פרויען, פארוואס זאל א פרעמדער מאן זיך ספראווען מיט פרעמדע פרויען אויף זייער גוף. מען קען זיכער אויסארבעטן א סיסטעם אז מען זאל קענען ארבעטן צוזאמען.

און דאס וואס זיי טענה'ן אז זיי קענען נישט האבן קיין שנעלע רעספאנס, איך דיסעגרי. עס איז דא זייער אסאך פלינקע און פאוערפול פרויען וואס קענען רעספאנדן שנעלערהייט. עס איז דא אסאך סוקסעספולע פרויען אין די פאליציי, פייערלעשער, מיליטער, אי. עם. עס וואס לויפן צו אלע מיני סצענעס ראטעווען מענטשן. פארשטייט זיך עס דארף ווערן אויסגעארבעט אויף א נארמאלע סיסטעם. אבער דאס אז הצלה פרובירט זיי אפשטעלן מאכט זיכער נישט קיין סענס.

NEW YORK (VINnews/Sandy Eller) – It was another battle in the ongoing war between Ezras Nashim and Hatzolah, as an unprecedented hearing at the state level on Wednesday afternoon gave the public a chance to weigh on the all-female ambulance corps’ application for an ambulance of its own.
Ezras Nashim submitted its first request for an ambulance approval to New York City’s Regional Emergency Medical Services Council last summer. That request was denied in October, as previously reported on VIN News (https://bit.ly/3e8SMUA), despite the hearing officer’s recommendation that it be approved. Several Hatzolah members were among those who voted against the application and Ezras Nashim appealed the REMSCO decision to the New York State Emergency Medical Services Council in Albany.

After considering the matter, Administrative Law Judge Tina M. Champion advised that the REMSCO decision be reversed and that Ezras Nashm’s application be granted because existing ambulance services were not meeting the unique modesty needs of local women.

NEW YORK (VINnews/Sandy Eller) – A lengthy legal battle that has dragged on for a year has finally come to a close with the New York State Emergency Medical Services Council (SEMSCO) overwhelmingly approving an application that would grant Ezras Nashim, a by-women for-women emergency medical care corps, the right to operate its own ambulances.


As previously reported on VIN News, Ezras Nashim appealed the New York City’s Regional Emergency Medical Council (REMSCO) denial of their application in October, noting that the group’s hearing officer had recommended its approval. Ezras Nashim also argued that it was inappropriate for several REMSCO Hatzolah members to vote on the matter given the ambulance corps’ very public opposition to Ezras Nashim.

23 SEMSCO members voted in favor of the Ezras Nashim application, with just two voting against the application. A third member, a medical director with Hatzolah, abstained.

Ezras Nashim founder Judge Ruchie Freier said that she believes that SEMSCO supported the application because they understood that it was motivated by altruism.

“They realized that we wanted to protect women’s modesty and that we had no ulterior motives,” Freier told VIN News.

Carson Kessler of The City tweeted that one council member cited the opposition of 49 rabbis as the reason for their no vote and quoted SEMSCO member Donald Duvall’s different view of the application saying, “The idea…that EMS is men’s work and women aren’t capable escapes me.”

Freier expects the ambulance certificate to be issued within the next few days and said that she has been eyeing a Sprinter-type vehicle, whose slightly smaller size is better suited to the crowded streets of Borough Park. Having heard that SEMSCO felt it was unfortunate that Hatzolah and Ezras Nashim couldn’t work together, Freier noted that she had spent a full year in 2011 trying to team up with Hatzolah, who told her to open up her own organization. Despite all that has transpired since then, Freier said she would still be amenable to working together with Hatzolah.

“We are not fighting with anyone – we are fighting for women’s modesty,” said Freier. “If Hatzolah wants to work with us, my number hasn’t changed.”


Knowing that a statewide council understood the need for Ezras Nashim’s services was extremely uplifting for Freier.

“I think that this shows the strength of Jewish women,” observed Freier. “We are Torah abiding women and we aren’t afraid to stand up for what we believe in.”

BROOKLYN (VINnews) – Ezras Nashim, the all-female volunteer EMT Corps has received its ambulance certification from the New York State Department of Health


The EMTs will start using the ambulance to respond to emergency calls and transport patients in the upcoming days

Until now they were certified as a Basic Life Support First Response Agency (BLSFR) and had to rely on the City and private agencies for transport

Leah Levine, COO of Ezras Nashim, said, 911 was so gracious, and will still be there for us as backup

Most of the women have already been trained for ambulance driving as they will be driving the ambulance to respond to emergencies

This is historic as such an ambulance certificate has not been issued in NYC for approximately two decades. It is the women’s need for modesty in pre-hospital emergency medical care that paved the way for this victory

In August 2020, Ezras Nashim’s Certificate of Need (CON) application for an ambulance was overwhelmingly approved by the NY State EMS Council in Albany by a 23-2 vote. That approval allowed them to purchase the ambulance, which then had to be certified by the Department of Health. Yesterday the DOH certification was issued, and once the final processing is complete, Ezras Nashim, with G-d’s help, will be able to start using their own ambulance to respond to emergency calls and transport patients
